Bowers & Wilkins Factory Sound Upgrades

Bowers & Wilkins is a British audiophile speaker brand founded in Worthing, England in 1966, well known in the hi-fi world for studio monitors used in mastering rooms like Abbey Road. Over the past couple of decades it's moved into car audio as a factory-fit option on a small number of premium and luxury manufacturers, sitting at the top end of the OEM sound system ladder alongside names like Burmester and Naim, above more mainstream factory brands like Bose or Harman Kardon.

Cars with a factory Bowers & Wilkins sound system

Bowers & Wilkins currently partners with a small group of manufacturers, usually as a flagship or high-trim audio option rather than a standard fitment across the whole range:

  • BMW — currently the highest-profile B&W partner. The "Diamond Surround Sound System" has been offered on the 5 Series, 7 Series, X5, X7, XM and iX, generally as an option on higher trims.
  • Volvo — a long-running collaboration marketed as "Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound," fitted across models including the S90, V90, XC90 and the electric EX90, with Dolby Atmos on newer implementations.
  • Maserati — fitted to the Ghibli, Levante and Quattroporte ranges as a premium audio option.
  • McLaren — bespoke lightweight B&W systems have featured in models such as the 570GT and 720S.
  • Aston Martin — B&W is the audio partner announced for the DB12.
  • Jaguar — older Jaguar models (XF, XJ and XK, roughly 2008–2015) were fitted with factory B&W systems. More recent Jaguar model lines have moved to a different audio partner, so this is best treated as a heritage fitment rather than something on current showroom stock.

We couldn't find solid, current evidence that Land Rover or Range Rover use Bowers & Wilkins as a factory system — Range Rover's premium audio partner is generally Meridian. If you're driving a Land Rover product, it's worth checking your speaker grille badging or owner's manual to confirm exactly what you've got before assuming it's B&W.

Strengths of the factory Bowers & Wilkins system

  • Genuine hi-fi pedigree — driver technology such as Diamond Dome tweeters and woven glass-fibre/aramid cones, drawn from B&W's home speaker ranges, is carried across into these car systems rather than it being a badge-only exercise.
  • Considered speaker placement — a number of B&W factory systems use extra speaker locations, such as dash-top or A-pillar tweeters, beyond the usual door-only layout, aimed at a cleaner, more direct soundstage.
  • Real amplifier power — flagship versions such as BMW's Diamond system run well over 1,000 watts across a large number of amplifier channels, which is genuinely high output for a factory fitment.
  • Multiple tuning modes — several implementations include selectable listening profiles (studio, concert, cinema-style modes and similar) built into the factory head unit.

Where the factory system falls short

Even a genuinely premium OEM system like Bowers & Wilkins is still constrained by the realities of how factory audio gets engineered:

  • Tuning is generic, not personal — every example of that model gets the same DSP tune regardless of trim differences, tyre/wheel changes, or personal taste. There's no factory option to have it re-tuned for your specific car.
  • The head unit is still the bottleneck — processing and amplification are locked to whatever the factory specified when the car was designed, which can be years before you bought it, with no owner access to crossover points, time alignment or EQ curves.
  • Real-world feedback is mixed — independent reviews and owner forums on some B&W-badged systems, particularly certain BMW implementations, describe a midrange that can sound congested or a low end that lacks real definition, which suggests the drivers are often capable of more than the factory processing is extracting from them.
  • Not something you can add later — because it's built around proprietary factory wiring and amplification, retrofitting a genuine B&W system into a car that didn't come with one isn't realistically possible, and swapping it out usually means significant rewiring.

Upgrading a Bowers & Wilkins-equipped car

Our approach to a B&W-equipped vehicle would be the same as every other factory system we work with: a plug-and-play DSP amplifier — genuine HELIX or MATCH hardware, not a generic aftermarket unit — wired straight into the factory harness using a vehicle-specific connector, with no cutting or soldering. The amplifier brings genuinely more power and control to that specific model, addressing exactly the kind of processing limitations covered above, while retaining 100% of the factory features you already rely on: steering wheel audio controls, DAB, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and the factory microphone all keep working exactly as they did before. Where it makes sense, this can be paired with a dedicated subwoofer or a full speaker upgrade, in the same Stage 1/2/3 structure we use across our other vehicle packages.

We don't currently have a published upgrade package for a Bowers & Wilkins-equipped model, but that's more a reflection of what we've prioritised building so far than any limit on what's technically possible.
