Tesla Model 3 Sound System Upgrade Guide

The Tesla Model 3 ships with one of the more sophisticated factory audio setups in its class — widely reported to have been engineered in partnership with s1nn, a Stuttgart-based acoustics firm founded by veterans of Bose and Harman. It's a genuinely accomplished factory system by EV standards, but it's also a sealed, single-purpose design with almost none of the flexibility a dedicated aftermarket setup offers. As Model 3 ownership keeps climbing in Australia, we're building out a dedicated upgrade path for it — here's what we know so far.

What's actually in a Model 3's factory system

Tesla doesn't publish a full spec sheet, but industry reporting and teardowns give a reasonably clear picture. Standard Sound trims run somewhere between 7 and 9 speakers (the exact count has shifted across model-year refreshes) off a single amplifier in the vicinity of 200W. Premium Sound trims step up significantly — commonly cited figures put it at 15 to 17 speakers, dual amplifiers with a combined output around 560W, and one or two dedicated subwoofers mounted in the boot. Premium cars also get Tesla's "Immersive Sound" processing, a spatial-audio DSP feature with adjustable width settings. Exact counts and outputs vary by model year and region, so check your own build sheet or the Tesla app if you want your car's specifics.

Where the factory system falls short

  • Bass extension on Standard Sound — with no dedicated subwoofer, Standard trims run out of low end long before Premium cars do, and the door woofers have to cover midbass and bass duty at once.
  • Amplifier headroom — both Standard and Premium amplifiers are reported to show distortion when pushed toward higher volumes, which is more noticeable in an EV cabin than it would be in a combustion car, simply because there's no engine or exhaust noise masking it.
  • A sealed, non-adjustable system — the touchscreen, amplifier and DSP are all bundled into Tesla's own hardware. There's a basic tone/EQ menu, but no access to real crossover points, time alignment or per-channel gain — the kind of tuning control that actually changes how a car sounds.
  • A very quiet cabin exposes flaws — EVs remove engine noise as a masking layer, so any harshness, sibilance or compression in the factory tune is more obvious than it would be in a petrol equivalent.

What a genuine Model 3 upgrade path looks like

A Tesla is a different proposition to upgrade than a traditional car, because there's no separate, replaceable head unit — the touchscreen, amplifier and DSP are one sealed system. That rules out the classic aftermarket move of swapping the head unit, and rules out true line-level tapping the way you'd do in a car with accessible pre-amp RCA outputs. It doesn't rule out a proper upgrade — it just changes where you tap in.
