Toyota Sound System Upgrade Guide

Toyota is Australia's best-selling car brand, and across the RAV4, Land Cruiser, Camry, Kluger and Hilux range the factory audio story follows a fairly consistent pattern: a slick, easy-to-use infotainment platform — the newer "Toyota Audio Multimedia" system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on recently updated models, or the older "Toyota Link" touchscreen on earlier ones — paired with a speaker package that varies wildly by grade, from genuinely basic on entry trims to a branded JBL premium system higher up the range. Even the JBL-badged setups, though, are still driven by a factory amplifier tuned for cost and reliability rather than outright sound quality. What's actually in a Toyota's factory system

Entry and mid-grade Toyotas — think RAV4 GX/GXL, Camry Ascent/Ascent Sport, Kluger GX/GXL, Hilux WorkMate/SR/SR5 and Land Cruiser GX/GXL — typically run a modest speaker count (commonly cited as around 6 to 8 speakers) off the standard head unit, with no dedicated amplifier or subwoofer. Step up to the top grades on many models — RAV4 Edge/Limited, Camry SL, Kluger Grande/Trailblazer, Land Cruiser Sahara/Kakadu, and select Hilux Rogue/GR Sport variants — and Toyota fits a JBL-branded premium audio system, usually adding extra speakers, a factory subwoofer and a JBL amplifier module. On the infotainment side, newer models across the range have moved to Toyota Audio Multimedia (part of the broader Toyota Connected Services rollout), bringing a larger touchscreen, embedded navigation, wireless phone mirroring and over-the-air updates, while older and commercial-focused variants still run the previous Toyota Link-based system on a smaller display.

Where the factory system falls short

• The factory amp is still the bottleneck — even on JBL-badged cars, the factory amplifier is sized to drive small factory speakers cleanly at moderate volume, not to deliver real headroom or dynamics when pushed.
• Speaker quality and placement are a compromise — factory door and dash speakers are typically small, thin-coned units mounted with minimal baffling, so bass and midrange detail get lost long before the volume knob does anything useful.
• No tuning control for the owner — gain, crossover points and time alignment are all locked in at the factory, so there's no way to correct for cabin acoustics or seating position even if you know exactly what's wrong.
• Base and mid grades miss out entirely — a large share of RAV4, Camry, Kluger, Hilux and Land Cruiser variants sold in Australia don't get the JBL system at all, leaving a genuinely entry-level speaker setup as the only option from the factory.

What a genuine Toyota upgrade path looks like
