BYD Sound System Upgrade Guide

BYD has gone from a niche import to one of the best-selling car brands in Australia in a few short years, and the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal and Sealion range now make up a huge share of new EV deliveries on our roads. Factory audio, though, hasn't kept pace with the rest of the package. Across most of the range BYD fits its own in-house or unbranded sound system rather than a partnered premium-audio setup — a Dynaudio badge does appear on some higher-spec Seal and Sealion 7 variants as part of a wider BYD-Dynaudio collaboration, but even where that badge is present, the hardware still runs through BYD's own factory tuning and amplifier, not a fully independent aftermarket-grade system.

What's actually in a BYD's factory system

Every current BYD runs on the brand's DiLink infotainment platform, built around a large tablet-style touchscreen (rotating on many models, though BYD has begun phasing that out on newer versions) that handles media, navigation, climate and vehicle settings from one interface. Behind that screen sits a factory amplifier driving a set of door and dash speakers, with exact speaker counts, subwoofer fitment and amplifier output varying quite a bit between models and trim levels — entry-level Atto 3 and Dolphin variants are generally set up more simply than a Dynaudio-badged Seal or Sealion 7. What's consistent across the range is that the touchscreen, amplifier and any DSP-style processing are all built into one sealed factory unit — there's no separate, swappable head unit to work with, the same architecture you'll find in most modern EVs.

Where the factory system falls short

  • Cost-driven tuning on most models — outside of the Dynaudio-badged higher trims, BYD's factory speakers and amplifier are built to a price point, which tends to show up as thin midrange, weak bass extension and a soundstage that never really pulls away from the dashboard.
  • Even the badged systems are locked down — a Dynaudio badge on a Seal or Sealion 7 dash doesn't hand you Dynaudio-level control. The amplifier, crossover points and tuning are still fixed by BYD's factory calibration, with no owner-accessible way to adjust gain, time alignment or frequency response.
  • DiLink is built for features, not fidelity — the rotating touchscreen and DiLink software are impressive for navigation, apps and vehicle settings, but audio quality has never been the design priority behind the platform.
  • The silent cabin exposes every weakness — like any EV, a BYD has no engine note to mask compression artefacts, thin bass or harshness in the factory speakers. Everything the factory system does wrong is audible at every speed, not just hidden under bonnet noise at idle.

What a genuine BYD upgrade path looks like

Because the touchscreen, amplifier and processing are all one sealed factory unit in a BYD, there's no head unit to swap out.
