Land Rover & Range Rover Sound System Upgrade Guide

Land Rover and Range Rover models are a common sight on Australian roads, and across the Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque range the factory audio story is fairly consistent: a slick "Pivi Pro" infotainment platform paired with a tiered audio system built in partnership with Meridian — stepping up from a standard factory speaker set on base grades, through a "Meridian Sound System" on mid-range trims, up to the flagship "Meridian Signature Sound System" on higher Range Rover and Range Rover Sport grades. It's genuinely well-engineered gear for a factory fitment, but even the higher trims leave real headroom on the table once you know what to listen for. What's actually in a Land Rover's factory system

Every current Land Rover and Range Rover model runs Pivi Pro, JLR's touchscreen infotainment platform, which handles head unit duties regardless of which audio system sits behind it. Entry grades typically get a standard factory-fit speaker system with a modest built-in amplifier. Step up and Meridian branding appears: a "Meridian Sound System" is offered across most of the range, with commonly cited figures putting this around 11 to 19 speakers and 400 to 800W of amplification depending on the model, while flagship variants get the "Meridian Signature Sound System", with commonly cited speaker counts into the 20s and 30s and amplifier output as high as 1,600W on the most optioned Range Rover, using Meridian's Trifield processing to convert stereo sources into a more immersive, multi-channel cabin experience. It's a genuinely capable setup on paper, and that's exactly why it's worth doing properly rather than replacing wholesale.

Where the factory system falls short

• Generic factory tuning — Meridian's tuning is developed for a broad global specification, not your specific cabin, seat trim and options, so what you're hearing is a compromise tune rather than one built for your car.
• Locked-out DSP — Pivi Pro's audio menu only exposes basic bass, treble, balance and fade adjustment; there's no access to the crossover points, time alignment or per-channel gain the factory processor is actually running.
• Amplifier power is spread thin — even on Meridian Signature-equipped cars, that power is shared across a large number of speakers, so individual channels don't get much clean power before distortion creeps in at higher volumes.
• Base grades miss out entirely — cars specified without the Meridian option get a standard speaker set and a basic amplifier with little low-end extension or stereo imaging to speak of.
