EMMA judging is built around one core idea: independence. Judges aren't scoring against personal taste or brand loyalty — they're trained against a global rulebook and criteria matrix that's the same whether you're competing in Sydney, Singapore or Sabadell.
How EMMA Australia approaches judging
As a newly established affiliate of EMMA Asia, EMMA Australia has committed to flying in experienced international judges for its first events, specifically to guarantee fair, world-class scoring from day one — while simultaneously mentoring and training a new generation of independent Australian judges. That's a deliberate choice: rather than standing up a purely local judging panel from scratch, Australian competitors are being scored against the same standard used at EMMA events worldwide.
My own role
I'm a Certified International EMMA Head Judge, and it genuinely shapes how I think about building and selling car audio systems — not just how a system measures, but how it's actually installed, documented and presented on competition day. It's also why the content on this site leans heavily on real EMMA criteria rather than generic "louder is better" car audio marketing: I'd rather help you build a system that would score well in front of a judge than one that just looks impressive in a product photo.
What judges are actually looking for
Every judge works from the same two lenses: installation quality (cleanliness, fusing, cable protection, mounting, craftsmanship) and sound quality (soundstage, imaging, tonal accuracy, spectral balance), scored against class-specific criteria — not personal preference.
