Getting a car genuinely competition-ready for EMMA isn't about spending the most money — it's about arriving with the right paperwork, the right music, and an install that matches the class you've entered. Here's the order I'd tackle it in, as someone who judges these events.
1. Decide which class you're entering
Before you buy a single part, work out whether you're chasing Entry €3,000 (budget-capped, unlimited install mods, great for a first competition), Entry Unlimited (no budget cap but limited fabrication — ideal if you've already got premium gear), Master €8,000, or Master Unlimited. Your class determines your equipment budget ceiling and how far you can go with fabrication, so it should shape every purchase decision that follows.
2. Calculate your system's value against the EMMA Value Database
If you're entering a price-capped class, what you actually paid for your gear is irrelevant — EMMA scores every component against its standardised database value (essentially MSRP), not your invoice. Build your equipment list against the official EMMA Value Database before you finalise your build, print the resulting budget sheet, and keep it in the car — you'll need to present it at registration and pre-judging checks.
3. Buy your own official competition tracks
Every competitor is judged on the same official EMMA Competition Music Files, purchased individually — not copied from a mate. Get yours from the EMMA Net Shop and spend real time listening to them in your own car before competition day so you know exactly what the judges will be hearing.
4. Study the rulebook and scoresheet for your class
Download the current EMMA rulebook and judgebook and the matching scoresheet, and actually read the install and SQ criteria for your specific class before you start fabricating anything. A huge number of avoidable point losses come down to competitors not knowing exactly what's being scored.
5. Register and pay your entry fee
Registration is a two-minute form on the EMMA Australia site, and entry is a one-time $29 AUD fee that gets you officially entered under the global EMMA system. See our full breakdown of entry costs for current pricing.
6. Get your install and tune genuinely dialled in — with real listening time
The single biggest difference between a car that scores well and one that doesn't isn't the equipment list, it's how much real seat time went into refining the install and the sound before competition day. Budget more time for this than you think you'll need.
7. Show up early on the day
Arrive with time to spare for the technical and pre-judging checks — charger connection, driving position, channel integrity and volume calibration all get verified before sound quality judging starts. Bring your printed value sheet, your track purchase proof, and a calm head.
