Sonos is best known as a home audio brand — wireless speakers and multi-room systems found in loungerooms worldwide. In the last couple of years it's begun moving into car audio too, supplying factory-fit speaker systems for select new-generation vehicles rather than licensing software the way some other name-brand audio partners do. In this OEM role Sonos sits in the same "premium factory upgrade" tier as brands like Bang & Olufsen or Bose — a genuine step up over base-model audio, badged and marketed as a drawcard feature.
Cars with a factory Sonos sound system
Sonos in-car systems are still new and, at this stage, limited to a small number of models — mostly built on Volkswagen Group platforms:
- Audi A3 / S3 (current generation) — the Sonos 3D premium sound system, with 15 speakers including a subwoofer, driven by a 16-channel factory amplifier. This is the system most Integrated Audio customers will actually own. Note that earlier A3/S3 generations shipped with Bang & Olufsen instead, so always check what your specific car has before ordering anything.
- Audi Q4 e-tron — Sonos's first-ever automotive system, a smaller 10-speaker setup with a dedicated subwoofer.
- Škoda Peaq — Škoda's new electric flagship offers a Sonos system as part of an optional package. As a very recently announced model, real-world detail on this system is still thin.
Sonos hasn't been confirmed in any other current Audi models (the related Q6 e-tron, for example, uses Bang & Olufsen instead) or in other manufacturers' vehicles at this stage. If your car isn't listed here, don't assume it has a Sonos system just because it has a premium-badged stereo.
Strengths of the factory Sonos system
- Genuinely capable hardware — reviewers of both the A3/S3 and Q4 e-tron systems have praised punchy, well-controlled bass and a clean, non-harsh top end.
- A proper multi-channel amplifier and dedicated subwoofer as standard, rather than a basic head-unit-powered setup.
- Sonos's spatial "3D" sound processing adds a wider, more immersive soundstage at moderate listening levels.
- Backed by a well-known consumer audio brand with a strong home-audio reputation, which generally translates to sound quality expectations above a generic factory system.
Where the factory system falls short
These are typical limitations of any factory-fit system, Sonos included — not criticisms specific to Sonos's engineering:
- Amplifier headroom. Even with more channels than a basic system, factory amplifiers are still built to a cost and space budget, and run out of clean power well before an aftermarket DSP amp does.
- One tune for a whole model range. The factory tuning has to work reasonably well across every trim, badge and speaker option Audi sells under the A3/S3 nameplate — it can't be optimised for your specific car the way dedicated aftermarket amplification can.
- Inconsistent midrange. Some reviews of the current A3/S3 Sonos system note a slightly disconnected feel between bass and midrange, suggesting there's tuning headroom still on the table even with the stock hardware.
- Locked ecosystem. As a factory-fitted system, there's no owner-accessible way to adjust crossover points, time alignment or EQ curves beyond what the infotainment menu exposes.

You don't need to rip out a factory Sonos system to get more out of it.
