Meridian Audio is a British high-end audio company with a long history in home hi-fi and cinema sound, and its automotive arm has been Jaguar Land Rover's premium factory audio partner for well over a decade. Unlike some OEM badges that are largely marketing tie-ins, Meridian's automotive systems involve genuine engineering input — Meridian's own DSP and Trifield surround processing are built into the factory hardware, not just the branding.
Cars with a factory Meridian sound system
Meridian's primary and best-documented home is Jaguar Land Rover, fitted across most of the group's current range in tiered form:
- Land Rover and Range Rover — offered across Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque, typically stepping up from a standard factory speaker set on base grades, through a "Meridian Sound System" on mid-range trims, to the flagship "Meridian Signature Sound System" on higher Range Rover and Range Rover Sport grades.
- Jaguar — Meridian has also been fitted across much of the current and recent Jaguar range as a factory or optional audio system, generally following a similar tiered structure to Land Rover.
Exact speaker counts, amplifier output and trim availability vary by model and model year, so check your infotainment branding or door speaker grilles to confirm what your specific car has, rather than assuming from the model name alone.
Strengths of the factory Meridian system
- Genuine engineering input, not just a badge — Meridian's own DSP and Trifield processing are built into the factory system, which is a step beyond a manufacturer simply licensing a name.
- High speaker counts on upper trims — the Meridian Signature Sound System runs into the 20s and 30s of speakers on the most optioned Range Rover variants, with amplifier output as high as 1,600W.
- An immersive, wide soundstage — Trifield processing is specifically designed to convert stereo sources into a more enveloping, multi-channel cabin experience, which is a genuine point of difference from a standard stereo factory system.
- Strong out-of-the-box tonal balance — Meridian-tuned systems are generally well regarded for clarity and balance relative to unbranded factory audio, even before any aftermarket work is done.
Where the factory system falls short
Being a genuinely engineered system doesn't exempt Meridian from the constraints every factory audio setup shares:
- Generic factory tuning — Meridian's tuning is developed for a broad global specification, not your specific cabin, seat trim and options, so what you're hearing is a compromise tune rather than one built for your car.
- Locked-out DSP — the infotainment audio menu only exposes basic bass, treble, balance and fade adjustment; there's no owner access to the crossover points, time alignment or per-channel gain the factory processor is actually running.
- Amplifier power is spread thin — even on Meridian Signature-equipped cars, that power is shared across a large number of speakers, so individual channels don't get much clean power before distortion creeps in at higher volumes.
- Base grades miss out entirely — cars specified without the Meridian option get a standard speaker set and a basic amplifier with little low-end extension or stereo imaging to speak of.
Upgrading a Meridian-equipped car
The fix isn't to rip out a Meridian system and start again — it's to feed it properly. Rather than ripping out a factory system that JLR and Meridian have already invested real engineering effort into, our approach is a plug-and-play DSP amplifier — genuine HELIX or MATCH hardware — wired straight into the factory harness behind the head unit or Meridian amplifier, tapping the existing speaker-level signal with no cutting or soldering. It hands you independent control over gain, crossover points and time alignment per channel, plus genuinely clean power the factory amplifier isn't able to deliver.
Every factory feature is retained: steering wheel audio controls, the infotainment system and the factory microphone all keep working exactly as before. Because nothing is cut or permanently altered, the car can always be returned to standard.
