EMMA vs IASCA: How the Two Car Audio Competition Bodies Compare

I get asked this a lot, usually by someone who's been competing (or watching competitions) under one banner and is curious whether their car would even qualify under the other. EMMA and IASCA are the two names you'll hear most in Sound Quality competition, and while they're solving the same basic problem — judging how good a car sounds, fairly and repeatably — they've built genuinely different rulebooks to do it. Here's how they actually differ, from someone who judges under EMMA rules every event.

Same goal, different structure

Both organisations run dedicated Sound Quality disciplines with trained judges, reference material, and a scoresheet-driven process rather than a popularity contest. Past that, the frameworks diverge quite a bit.

Classes: budget caps vs experience tiers

EMMA splits Sound Quality into budget-tiered classes — from an Entry class capped at up to €3,000 in system value, through Skilled and Master tiers, up to an Expert/Extreme class with no installation limits and heavy documentation requirements. IASCA's Sound Quality Challenge takes a different cut: seven classes running Rookie, Amateur, Pro/Am, Pro, Ultimate, Expert Solo and Expert. The first four are judged "single seat" from the driver's position only; Ultimate and Expert step up to two-seat judging, with either two judges front and back or one judge evaluating both positions. It's a progression built around experience and installation complexity rather than a hard value cap.

What's actually being scored

IASCA judges score against five criteria: Tonal Accuracy & Spectral Balance, Sound Stage, Imaging, Sound Linearity, and Absence of Noise. EMMA runs two separate scoring matrices — one for installation quality and one for sound quality — with the maximum points available scaling up as you move into the higher classes, which is why an Expert-class car with a full document pack and presentation can out-score a technically similar Entry-class build. Reference material and playback level

IASCA judges listen at a set 80–90 dB SPL window, adjusted in 5 dB steps if ambient noise demands it, played from the Official IASCA Sound Quality Reference CD (or an approved substitute if you supply the source). Why this matters if you're building for Australia

EMMA Australia is the local affiliate under the EMMA Asia division, which means Australian competitors are now judged to the same standardised rulebook used globally — with international judges brought in early to keep scoring consistent while local judges come up to speed. If you're building or fine-tuning a car for competition here, that's the ruleset your installation and equipment value actually need to satisfy, not IASCA's.

The practical takeaway: don't assume a car built and priced for one organisation's rules drops straight into the other. A system that comfortably fits an IASCA class won't automatically sit in the equivalent EMMA value tier, and vice versa — the caps, the documentation expectations, and even what counts toward "value" aren't the same.
