Soundstage and Imaging in EMMA Sound Quality Judging

Every EMMA Sound Quality car I judge gets marked on more than just tonal balance. A big chunk of the sheet is about where the sound actually appears to come from — and that's split into two categories competitors often lump together: soundstage and imaging. They're related, but they're scored separately, and mixing them up is one of the fastest ways to leave points on the table.

Soundstage: the shape of the space

Soundstage is about the size and boundaries of the "room" your system creates in front of you. On the SQ scoresheet this breaks down into a few distinct elements:

  • Distance — how close the nearest instrument in the mix appears to sit relative to the listener. A stage that starts out past the windshield scores well; one that collapses in behind your head doesn't.
  • Width — how far the stage extends from the furthest left position to the furthest right, judged against fixed reference points rather than a gut feeling.
  • Height — whether instruments sit consistently at eye level (or above) across the frequency range, rather than the highs floating up near the headliner while the bass stays down in the footwells.
  • Room information — the sense of ambience and reverb that tells the judge there's a believable "space" around the instruments, scored on a scale from a flat, roomless presentation up to an unrealistically oversized one.

Get the staging right and the car doesn't just sound wide — it sounds like a real, consistent space you could walk into.

Imaging: precision inside that space

Imaging is judged using dedicated tracks with individual tones or instruments panned to specific positions — left, left-centre, centre, right-centre, right. Two things are marked here:

  • Position — does each tone actually land where it's supposed to, as a single, locatable point, not smeared across two speakers or hanging in the middle by accident?
  • Focus — is each instrument the correct relative size? A properly focused image has small elements (like a triangle) rendering as a tight pinpoint and larger elements (like an electric bass) rendering appropriately larger — without either bleeding into its neighbours.
As a judge, the most common install fault I hear isn't bad speakers — it's mismatched time alignment or processing between left and right that blurs focus and drags images off their correct position. That's a tuning problem, not a budget problem.

Why the split matters for how you tune

Because staging and imaging are scored as separate line items, you can genuinely be strong in one and weak in the other. A system can throw an enormous, wide soundstage and still lose imaging points because individual instruments aren't pinned precisely — usually down to speaker placement, off-axis response, or time alignment that hasn't been dialled in tightly enough. Conversely, a tight, well-imaged system can still feel small if the overall stage height or depth isn't there. If you're chasing points, treat them as two separate tuning problems, not one.
