One of the first decisions you'll make as an EMMA competitor is which class to enter — and it's a decision worth getting right, because it shapes your equipment budget, your allowed fabrication, and honestly, how much fun you'll have on the day. Here's how the four Sound Quality classes used at Australian EMMA events actually differ.
It's also worth knowing that EMMA Australia sits inside EMMA Asia — Australian events run to the same standardised rules, judging criteria and equipment-value system as every other EMMA Asia affiliate. Your car never actually travels to an international final; what travels is your scorecard. Score well enough here and that same paperwork can genuinely put you into contention at the EMMA Asia Finals — which is exactly why Australia has to run to identical standards rather than a locally simplified version of the rules.
Entry €3,000 (≈ $4,840 AUD)
A strict equipment budget cap of €3,000 — roughly $4,840 AUD at current exchange rates, though the cap itself is always set and checked in Euros against the official EMMA Value Database, not against a converted AUD figure (see why Euros below). Entry is specifically for competitors who have never entered an EMMA competition before, and it's a one-way door: win Entry once, and you're no longer eligible to re-enter it — you graduate up. That rule is what keeps Entry genuinely levelled for newcomers rather than becoming a class repeat winners camp out in. This is the natural home for a first-time competitor running a sensible plug-and-play DSP amp and speaker upgrade — the cap keeps the playing field level against other newcomers rather than pitting you against someone's ten-thousand-dollar reference build.
Entry Unlimited
No equipment budget cap, but limited custom fabrication allowance. This one exists for newcomers who've already invested in high-end gear — maybe from a previous non-competition build — and don't want to be capped out of Entry, but also aren't ready for the fabrication-heavy expectations of Master. Basic installation requirements apply, and you'll still get direct, constructive judge feedback.
Master €8,000 (≈ $12,900 AUD)
The same idea as Entry, but with a €8,000 cap — roughly $12,900 AUD — and aimed at seasoned competitors and people from the industry (installers, retailers, tuners) who arguably start with a bit of an unfair advantage over a genuine newcomer, which is why they're kept in a separate class. Moderate installation requirements and mandatory documentation of your build apply. This is where installs start getting genuinely serious — expect judges to expect more thoughtful integration, not just a bolted-in amp and sub.
Master Unlimited
The elite tier. No budget cap, unlimited fabrication, for competitors and professionals building reference-grade systems with no compromise. If you're seeing full interior rebuilds, hidden enclosures and extensive acoustic treatment at an EMMA final, this is almost certainly the class.
Bigger budget doesn't mean better score
It's a common misconception that you need to spend right up to the cap — or beyond, into Unlimited — to be competitive. You don't. Every competitor within a class is working inside the same spend limit, so the differentiator isn't how much you spent, it's the quality of your tuning and installation. A well-tuned Entry €3,000 build with a genuinely good install regularly outscores a rushed, over-specified system sitting well under the cap.
